About Eòghann Mac Colla
Eòghann Mac Colla is from Scotland. Landscape is the starting point for much of his work. A period living and working in Barcelona made Mac Colla re-examine his own cultural reference points. This became the starting point for a journey that has taken him to Ireland, Iceland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia – all places that are culturally linked through language and migration. Predominantly a painter, Mac Colla is interested in indigenous histories and stories of the cultures that have had to survive beside, or within, a larger more dominant one. His paintings are frequently of landscapes where the land meets the sea, yet they contain visual elements – the side of a house, a road, playing fields, a car park – that hint at the communities in these isolated coastal regions.
