Tjörnes Peninsula is in Northern Iceland, close to the Arctic circle. It is stunningly beautiful in all types of weather with whales in the ocean and birds in the sky. The painting is a memory of driving along the coast listening to Múm and the oystercatchers.

The title means scheme, as in council housing scheme. Place affects our outlook on life, it shapes how we are.

Recently there has been a development in my practice, an interest in the way we look at reality and value "beauty". The interest in this gable end came to me because of the abstract qualities: the simple composition. It is on my street and I see it every other day. It is the last house that backs onto the field, making it in a sense a boundary between the urban and the rural. Often we have built in preconceptions of where is desirable, or what we should aspire to. As an artist I am interested in challenging such preconceptions.

The title means, between Seyðisfjörðar and Egilsstaðir, two settlements in the north east of Iceland. During the last few years through my work as an artist, I have travelled extensively, predominately by car, as it is usually the only way. This has led me to look at, and be on, numerous roads all over the periphery of north-western Europe. It seems an appropriate image to use. I have made numerous drawings in such places. The snow poles show the height the snow can reach in the winter months, although the snow is falling less and less. The road paintings also illustrate our dependency on cars and in turn petrol. There is no choice when you live in Hebridean Scotland or north eastern Iceland, often there is little or no public transport available. It is a matter of survival and the green issues unfortunately have to be put to one side. Perhap's it is easier to be concerned with global warming when you are sitting in a warm city.

An cuan means the ocean in Gaelic. During my time in the community of Borgarfjörður Eystri I was lucky enough to get access to studio space in Kjarvalsstofa, the museum in honour of Johannes Kjarval, Iceland’s painter. It was a valuable opportunity to watch village life from the window in the rain and look at the northern ocean. These paintings are the result. Every day the same people went past at pretty much the same time, visiting the shop, using the petrol pump or the post office. I particularly enjoyed watching an elderly man on an old Massey tractor go by carrying a bale or two. He only went at 10mph and took forever to pass!
